The Assassination of Michael Jackson

Posted on 07. Jul, 2009 by nostraboris in Culture

This week I watched “Living with Michael Jackson” for the first time. A document of breech of trust. Not that between Jackson and the children he was accused of molesting, but the trust given by a naive, eccentric pop icon to a shamelessly ambitious, and two-faced TV personality by the name of Martin Bashir.

After humoring him by asking music related questions, Bashir begins gently prying into Jackson’s childhood. Careful not to upset his subject too much, he initially backs off. Later, they go shopping. When Jackson awkwardly holds his baby, Bashir smiles.

After leaving the room however, the film maker narrates the scene as follows: “Michael’s behavior was beginning to alarm me“. What caused the contrast between the on screen warmth and post production concern is unsure. Public opinion? Sudden integrity? Intoxicated by the smell of a scoop, Bashir changes tone. Eager to feed the hunger of the mob, the aspiring anchor turns on his host and attacks. Jackson is ambushed, and pressed on his plastic surgery, inferiority complex, the race of his surrogate mother, and sleep overs at his house.

Everyone knows Jackson had plastic surgery, and off course he denied it. Name me one person who admits to it other than Joan Rivers. Big fucking deal.

The caricature of Michael Jackson laying in bed naked with dozens of children sold as well as his records. America is so sex obsessed that in our sensationalist culture, children sleeping in their parents bed equals incest. Michael Jackson may have lacked certain boundaries, and could have used some counseling in that department. A child rapist he was not.

His biggest flaw was not covering up his eccentricities, and leaving himself open to the real predators: the gold digging parents that sent their kids over.

His biggest mistake was paying off the first shakedown attempt, to avoid an O.J. style public trial. This made him appear guilty. Although the last court case cleared him, it mortally wounded his soul. Disillusioned, he isolated from his friends, surrounded himself with enablers, and slid into addiction. Finally, he perished prematurely, as seems to be the rule for any American Iconoclast.

Those scolding him now are transient peaks in the callous, cynical cycle of our 24 hr static. The ones using his death to polarize between races are the buffoons, and demagogues of our time.

Both are expendable and bound by time. Eventually, the legacy of a 40 year career will outshine them, and all that remains will be the music that defined, narrated and inspired the lives of millions.

Rest in Peace Michael Jackson.

Well said. I also watched “Living with Michael Jackson” for the first time yesterday, and I completely agree with you. Martin Bashir is a pathetic man. I couldn’t believe it when I saw him last night on ABC News, looking all sympathetic while commenting on how touched he was at the memorial service … two-faced idiot, he should be ashamed of himself.
